What questions should you ask a rehabilitation facility before you admit your loved one?

• Can you handle my loved one’s specific care needs as defined by the physician?

• What services do you offer? Which of those services are included in the base price?

• Do you have a licensed dietician on staff?

• What is your staffing ratio?

• How many RNs, LVNs, and CNAs do you employ? Is there always an RN on duty?

• How often do you perform background checks on staff? Medicare/Medicaid fraud checks? Drug screens?

• What is your visitation policy?

• Are patients included in the care planning process? Are family members included?

• Do you use a managed therapy company or do you employ your therapists yourself?

• How many hours of rehab per day will my loved one receive? What if he/she isn’t able to keep up with that schedule?

• Will you keep me informed of how long my loved one can stay?

• How much notice will I get when it’s time for my loved one to be discharged?

• Do you appeal health insurance decisions if I don’t think my loved one is ready to leave?

• What health insurance(s) do you accept?

• How will I know how much my health insurance will pay?

• How do I know how much my loved one will have to pay?

• Have you recently performed a satisfaction survey of patients? Of family members of patients?

• Has your license ever been revoked? If so, what for?
