Assisted Living Locators

Karen Mitchell is a Certified Senior Advisor and owner of Assisted Living Locators of Fort Worth.

Assisted Living Locators helps people looking for senior living communities that provide independent living, assisted living, and memory care accommodations.

Although many people haven’t heard of the services Mitchell provides, she can be a major difference-maker in the lives of a senior and their family when they are looking for senior living options.

To start the process, Mitchell likes to get to know her clients.

“It’s more about relationship building than anything else, because I want them to be comfortable with me while I get to know and understand their unique, individual needs,” Mitchell said.

After learning about the client’s interests, lifestyle, budget, and medical needs, Mitchell usually suggests three or four possible communities in or near the location they desire.

Next, Mitchell sets up a tour of each of the recommended communities and accompanies the client and their family on the tours.

Mitchell also provides them with resources to help with applying for veterans benefits or Medicaid, utilizing their long-term care insurance or any other means to make the transition more readily affordable.

The process of finding the perfect new home for a client doesn’t usually take very long; Mitchell has helped seniors get through the whole transition in less than four days after first meeting them.

In order to do her job effectively, Mitchell needs to have a good working knowledge of the communities she might suggest.

Working with over 60 communities in her territory can be a challenge, but she makes sure that she tours every site and keeps up with the feedback that her clients provide after moving in.

Texas Health and Human Services regularly inspects all licensed senior living communities and residential care homes. Mitchell monitors these reports will never suggest a community that has an issue with safety.

Although she primarily serves Parker, Tarrant, and Hood counties, she can help seniors relocate to the perfect community anywhere in the country.

Getting to know each community and her clients in-depth requires time and diligence, but Mitchell joyfully does it because of her love for helping seniors and their families.

She says that many times families are desperately in need of help finding somewhere suitable for the elderly relative.

“It’s a difficult time for them,” Mitchell said. “I get a lot of calls from families that are trying to find a place for mom or dad, and I can hear the anxiety in their voices. They’re concerned, they’re worried, they want to ensure their parents are safe and are being cared for. That’s why I have the desire to relieve the stress that I know they are experiencing.”

After she helps the senior find their new home, Mitchell loves to keep in touch. She makes followup visits to her clients to see how they are doing.

The transition into a senior living center is not only emotionally stressful but Mitchell also knows that it can be financially difficult. Assisted Living Locators’ services are completely free to the client.

Most web-based services suggest senior living options without really getting to know the communities or the seniors, but for Mitchell, it’s all about the people.

She teared up when discussing the seniors she gets to know and help.

“When I get to call their families after helping them, I just get so excited,” Mitchell said. “It’s the best thing ever. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
